:: The Role of Legal Translation in Legal Harmonisation
  On January 21, 2011, the Centre for the Study of European Contract Law and the Amsterdam Circle for Law & Language hosted a 1-day conference focusing on the Role of Legal Translation in Legal Harmonisation. Juriscribe's Executive Director, Steven Kahaner, was pleased to attend this conference as the only U.S.-based participant. The conference featured presentations by Ingemar Strandvik (Quality Manager of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation), William Robinson (Sir William Dale Visiting Fellow at the University of London's Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, formerly Coordinator in the Legal Revisers Group in the Commission Legal Service), Susan ? ar?evi? (Professor in Legal English and EU Terminology, University of Rijeka Faculty of Law), and Gerard-René de Groot (Professor of Comparative Law and International Law, University of Maastricht), among others. The presentations focused on the practices of legal translation in the EU legislative procedure, various approaches to legal translation best suited for the purpose of legal harmonisation, and the influence of Europe's multilingualism on the feasibility of harmonised law in the EU.

  Steven Kahaner has successfully completed a three-year term as Chair of the Committee on Inter-American Affairs of the New York City Bar (www.nycbar.org). The Committee's recent accomplishments under his leadership include the publication of an "eGuide to Online Sources of Law Relating to Latin America"

:: Article in Iberian Lawyer magazine
  Juriscribe's Executive Director, Steven Kahaner, is interviewed by Iberian Lawyer magazine regarding the translation of legal documents. In "Lost and Found in Translation" (http://www.iberianlawyer.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1814&Itemid=44), Mr. Kahaner discusses the issues faced by law firms and in-house counsel in obtaining idiomatically correct translations that compensate for the conceptual issues raised by different legal systems, and emphasizes that although the work of translation can be outsourced, it is more difficult for lawyers to externalize responsibility for the accuracy of the translation, which can only be assured through close cooperation with the translation provider and a clear communication of the lawyers’ expectations.

  Juriscribe's Executive Director, Steven Kahaner, chaired a panel discussion "Legal Translation - Raising the Bar" at the ATA's 2009 Annual Conference in New York City. Co-panelists included Professor Alejandro Garro, Adjunct Professor of Law and Senior Research Scholar at Columbia University's Parker School of Foreign and Comparative Law, and Thomas L. West III, also an attorney and the author of the "Spanish-English Dictionary of Law and Business."

  Juriscribe is pleased to announce the publication of a new article, "The Administration of Justice in a Multilingual Society - Open to Interpretation or Lost in Translation?" in the March-April 2009 edition of "Judicature" magazine, published by the American Judicature Society (http://www.ajs.org/ajs/publications/ajs_judicature.asp). :: Juriscribe Sponsors Launch of the Pro Bono Declaration for the Americas
  Juriscribe is pleased to have been able to sponsor the launch of the Pro Bono Declaration for the Americas, held on January 22, 2008 at the Americas Society and Council of the Americas building on Park Avenue in Manhattan.

The 'Pro Bono Declaration for the Americas' initiative is coordinated by the Cyrus Vance Center for International Justice Initiatives of the New York City Bar. It promotes the concept of a lawyer's social responsibility to help the poor and marginalised and invites legal professions throughout the Americas to promote pro bono work as a way for lawyers to meet their social responsibility. Over three hundred law firms, bar associations, law schools, prominent private bar lawyers, NGOs and others have signed the Declaration so far. By doing so, they have signed up both to the values of pro bono, and - for those in law firms or departments - to a specific commitment of 20 pro bono hours per lawyer per year.

:: Steven Kahaner appointed to chair Committee on Inter-American Affairs
  Juriscribe is pleased to announce that our Executive Director, Steven Kahaner, has been appointed to a three-year term as the Chair of the Committee on Inter-American Affairs of The Association of the Bar of the City of New York. The Association, with more than 23,000 members, works for political, legal and social reform, and maintaining high ethical standards for the legal profession. Much of this work is accomplished through the Association's more than 160 committees. The Committee on Inter-American Affairs is a standing committee of the Association that addresses legal and policy issues in Canada and Latin American countries, and develops relationships with bar associations and institutions in those countries.

Concurrently with his appointment as Chair of the Committee on Inter-American Affairs, Steve has also been appointed to a three-year term on the Association's Council on International Affairs and the Committee for the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice Initiatives.

:: Juriscribe participates in I Congreso de Traduccion Especializada
  Juriscribe's Executive Director, Steven Kahaner, and Director of Spanish Translations, Ricardo Chiesa, both participated as speakers and panelists in the I Congreso de Traducción Especializada sponsored by the Colegio de Traductores Públicos De la Ciudad de Buenos Aires (the translators' association of the City of Buenos Aires), held this July 27-29, 2006, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The sessions focused on a number of topics of interest to legal translators, including the translation of lending and bankruptcy terminology, as well as a roundtable discussion regarding the training and education required to become a successful legal translator.

:: Ricardo Chiesa Teaches Legal Translation Workshop
  On July 1, 2006, Juriscribe's Director of Spanish Translations, Ricardo Chiesa, taught an eight-hour workshop on "Applied English Grammar and Error Analysis for Translators of Legal Texts" to an audience of more than 120 translators, translation teachers and bilingual lawyers in Lima, Peru. The workshop was organized by Lima-based Euroidiomas, Instituto Superior de Traducción.

  On April 24, 2006, Juriscribe was pleased to co-sponsor a joint meeting of the International Law and Civil Rights Committees of the New York City Bar featuring Judge Baltasar Garzón of Spain, who shared his thoughts on "The Limits of Universal Jurisdiction: the experience of Spain." :: Ricardo Chiesa joins Juriscribe as Director of Spanish Translations
  Juriscribe is pleased to announce that Ricardo Chiesa has joined us as Director of Spanish Translations.

Mr. Chiesa, a graduate of the University of Buenos Aires, is an Attorney-at-law and Certified Translator in Argentina. He is a member of the Bar Association of the City of Buenos Aires, the Buenos Aires Association of Certified Translators, and the American Translators Association (ATA).

Ricardo's teaching experience includes posts as the Director of the Post-Graduate Course in Legal English and Common Law for Civil-Law Lawyers (Universidad Austral, Buenos Aires) and Instructor of Translation of Legal and Economic Texts at the Translation Master?s Program (Universidad de Belgrano, Buenos Aires). He is also a former Professor of Legal Translation (English <> Spanish) and Anglo-American Law at the Universidad de Buenos Aires and has been a Legal Advisor to the Board of Discipline of the Buenos Aires Association of Certified Translators.

Ricardo has presented papers and taught seminars on legal English and Spanish and legal translation at various international conferences held in the United States, Finland and Argentina. He has also published several articles on legal translation in international journals and magazines, including The ATA Chronicle and El Lenguaraz.

:: Christian Schoenberg joins as Director of Nordic Translations
  Juriscribe is pleased to announce that Christian Schoenberg has joined our team as Director of Nordic Translations.

Christian has a rich and varied background spanning the industries of language services, management consulting, and book and magazine publishing. He has over thirteen years? freelance experience translating Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian documents related to the legal profession. He has provided interpretation services at depositions and in court, and has served a large number of East Coast law firms and agencies with abstracting, general translation of discovery material and correspondence.

Christian holds a B.A. and an M.A. from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, in English Philology and Literature, an M.Phil. in English and French Poetry from Stirling University, Scotland, and an M.St. in Research Methods and Ph.D. (D.Phil. Oxon.) in English Literature, both from the University of Oxford, England. Christian has taken the U.S. State Department exam, is an active member of, and certified by, the American Translators Association (ATA), an active member of its Medical and Nordic Divisions, the New York Circle of Translators (NYCT), the New England Translators Association (NETA), and the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters & Translators (NAJIT).

:: Presentation on "Argentine Bankruptcy Law and Terminology"
  Juriscribe's Executive Director, Steven Kahaner, presented an in-depth review of Argentine bankruptcy law and terminology at the Financial Translation Conference of the American Translators Association (ATA). The presentation drew on Juriscribe's extensive involvement in the translation of thousands of pages of documents relating to litigation in both the United States and Argentina regarding the reorganizations of several Argentine companies.

:: Presentation on "Translation and Related Foreign-Language Issues in International Practice"
  Juriscribe's Executive Director, Steven Kahaner, gave a presentation on December 13 to the Foreign & Comparative Law Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York entitled "Translation and Related Foreign-Language Issues in International Practice." The presentation focused on various topics of interest to the international practitioner, who must frequently deal with cultural and language differences in litigation discourse and contract drafting, among other issues. In addition to discussing specific language-related issues and the process required to create high-quality legal translations, Mr. Kahaner also gave advice on issues to consider in contracting the services of a translator, interpreter or agency, and effective means to reduce the cost of translation.

  Juriscribe's Executive Director, Steven Kahaner, was elected for a second time to the Board of Directors of The Association of Language Companies (ALC). Steve was subsequently elected by the Board to the position of Vice President, having previously served as Secretary. Juriscribe is a Founding Member of the ALC.

  On May 18, 2004, Juriscribe's Executive Director, Steven Kahaner, gave a presentation in Manhattan to the New York Circle of Translators regarding current issues in the development of quality standards for the translation industry. Mr. Kahaner discussed the standards being developed in the United States by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and those being developed in Europe by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), and the impact those standards may have on the industry.
